Linguistic assets refer to a variety of resources that play a crucial role in maintaining consistency, accuracy, and alignment with brand identity during the translation process. As a linguist working in Smartling, you have access to these resources when working in the CAT Tool. Additionally, Project Managers and Account Owners can grant agencies and linguists additional permissions to view and edit these resources outside the CAT Tool.
These resources include:
Glossary
A Glossary is a list of key terms and instructions on how to handle them.
Accessing the Glossary in the CAT Tool
In the CAT Tool, a Glossary term is marked by a dotted line in the source string.
- Hover over the Glossary term to view the definition and translation instructions.
- To search for a specific Glossary term, click into the Glossary tab of the CAT Tool. Type the term in the search bar and press Enter.
Accessing a Glossary Outside the CAT Tool
By default, as a Translation Resource you can view glossaries from the Assets menu, but additional glossary permissions can be granted to allow editing.
- Navigate to the Project Summary Page.
- Click Assets in the top navigation bar > Glossaries.
Blocklist
A Blocklist is a list of forbidden terms that should never be included in your translations.
Blocklist Terms in the CAT Tool
Provided that your client has configured Quality Checks for Blocklist terms, an error message will be displayed when you try to save a translation containing a forbidden term. Depending on the Quality Check severity level, you may be unable to save and submit a translation containing a blocklisted term.

Style Guide
