Included with the AI Hub
Once the AI Hub has been activated for your account, a wide range of NMT providers and LLMs can be used to translate your content. The following capabilities are included:
Machine Translation & LLM Translation (with RAG) Workflows
Translate any content uploaded to Smartling using a machine or LLM translation workflow. Create Profiles to translate with any supported MT engine or LLM provider (including LLM translation with RAG). Content is ingested into the Smartling TMS, allowing you to route it through a customizable workflow, with or without a human editor in the loop.
For more information, see Setting Up a Machine or LLM Translation Workflow.
Instant MT Integrations
Get near-instant translations from an MT engine or LLM using a Profile. Unlike translation workflows, content is not ingested into the Smartling TMS. Instead, translations are delivered directly where they are needed, such as on your GDN-translated site or in connected platforms like ServiceNow, Zendesk, and others.
For more information, see AI Hub Settings: Instant MT.
MT API
Smartling's MT API lets you translate content instantly using any configured Profile, integrating machine translation directly into your applications and tools. Like Instant MT integrations, translations are returned without being ingested into the TMS or moving through a workflow.
For more information, see Smartling's MT API or the API reference documentation.
Smartling Translate
Smartling Translate is an easy-to-use portal for translating text or files using your preferred MT engine or LLM, without any workflow, project, or job configuration. Access it from the Tools menu in the AI Hub.
AI-Enhanced Glossary Term Insertion
AI-Enhanced Glossary Term Insertion automatically inserts your glossary terms into MT or LLM translations and uses an LLM to correct the grammatical structure around inserted terms, improving the probability of a correct, terminology-compliant output.
For more information, see Insert Glossary Terms in Machine Translations.
Smartling Auto Select
Smartling Auto Select is Smartling's proprietary MT Profile. It evaluates your content and automatically routes it to the best-suited MT engine for translation. No provider credentials or setup are required; it comes pre-configured and ready to use.
Bring Your Own Key (BYOK)
Use a specific MT engine or LLM provider by bringing your own provider key and storing it securely in Smartling via credentials. BYOK supports all of Smartling's supported MT and LLM providers, including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, DeepL, OpenAI (GPT), Google Gemini, and more. Once stored, your credentials can be used to create custom Profiles.
MT Suggestions in the CAT Tool
Even with a human translation workflow, MT can help linguists work more efficiently. MT suggestions in the CAT Tool use your configured Profile to show linguists an initial translation generated by an MT engine or LLM, which can then be amended and edited.
Quality Check AI Correction
For strings with a quality check error, translators can automatically generate a fix via Quality Check AI Correction, allowing linguists to fix errors at the click of a button.
Optional add-ons
The following are optional add-ons that can be purchased separately to enhance your AI Hub experience:
AI Toolkit
Smartling's AI Toolkit is a paid add-on to the AI Hub with separate pricing. It is a bundle of AI-powered features that automatically enhance and post-edit MT or LLM translations.
The AI Toolkit includes the same AI post-editing features that AIT and AIHT workflows include by default. It is designed for customers who want to use their own language service provider (LSP) rather than Smartling Language Services, while still benefiting from AI-powered post-editing to automatically improve MT or LLM translation output.
The Toolkit includes:
- AI Post-Editing Agent: Reviews grammar, tone, and semantic accuracy, enriched with your linguistic assets to match your company's voice.
- AI Adaptive Translation Memory: Increases TM leverage in machine translations by optimizing available fuzzy matches.
- Language Quality Estimation (LQE): Predicts the estimated translation quality for each string, allowing you to route content for human review more efficiently.
- AI Formality Adjustment: Adjusts machine translations between formal and informal registers based on your Style Guide preferences.
The AI Toolkit features cannot be purchased individually, but they can each be enabled or disabled as needed.
For more information, see Smartling's AI Toolkit and the Checklist for Enabling the AI Toolkit.
Custom Trained MT Engine / LLM Fine-Tuning
Smartling offers custom MT engine training and LLM fine-tuning services. A custom-trained engine or fine-tuned LLM learns from your existing translations and linguistic assets to produce output tailored to your style and terminology, significantly improving quality over a generic engine.
If you are interested in LLM fine-tuning services, please contact your Customer Success Manager.
Machine Created Translation Memory (MCTM)
A Machine Created Translation Memory (MCTM) is a dedicated translation memory that stores machine-generated translations separately from human translations. It allows you to leverage AIT translations completed by Smartling Language Services.
Separate products: AI-powered workflows by Smartling Language Services
In addition to the AI Hub, Smartling offers fully managed, AI-powered translation workflows through Smartling Language Services. These are separate products from the AI Hub and the AI Toolkit:
AI Translation (AIT)
AI Translation (AIT) is a fully automated translation workflow that selects the best MT provider for your content and enriches the translations with Smartling's most innovative AI features. AIT achieves quality comparable to traditional MTPE, with near-immediate turnaround for high-resource languages. This pre-configured workflow is fully managed by Smartling Language Services, with no setup required.
AI-Powered Human Translation (AIHT)
AI-Powered Human Translation (AIHT) combines the same AI-powered base translations as AIT with a human review step managed by Smartling Language Services. AIHT achieves quality comparable to traditional human translation, at half the cost and twice the speed.
Both AIT and AIHT workflows are backed by Smartling's Satisfaction Guarantee. To enable either for your account, please reach out to your Customer Success Manager. For more information, see Introduction to MT and AI Translation in Smartling.
Smartling AI Subscription
With a Smartling AI Subscription, you can pre-pay for a unified capacity that covers multiple AI translation offerings under a single subscription, including AI Hub usage. This gives you flexibility in how you allocate your translation budget.
For more information, see Smartling's AI Subscription.
Benefits of Smartling's AI Hub
With Smartling, you can seamlessly integrate MT or LLM translation into your localization processes while still benefiting from the control and scalability of a Translation Management System (TMS).
Reliability
- String integrity: Whether you use Smartling-provisioned MT engines or bring your own API key (BYOK), the AI Hub applies pre- and post-processing rules to ensure no strings are broken and workflows continue uninterrupted.
- Automatic fallback system: If the first-choice engine fails, a fallback engine will be invoked to ensure the translation is delivered.
Cost optimization & reporting
- SmartMatch savings: In a workflow that uses MT, all segments are first checked against translation memory. SmartMatches are leveraged and are not sent to the MT engine or LLM service, significantly reducing costs.
- Reporting: MT workflow reports, engine performance comparison reports, and Edit Distance reports are available both out of the box and on demand.
Customization
- By integrating your linguistic assets, such as your glossary or translation memory, the translation output is more tailored to your organization's tone and terminology.
- Additional AI features can be used to further smooth and enhance the translation output.
Quality & consistency enhancement
- Custom translation rules: Post-translation rules are applied to capture stylistic preferences and locale-specific conventions.
- Dynamic workflows: Machine-translated content can pass through dynamic workflows where the translations can be post-edited or reviewed by humans if a different quality level is desired.
- Instant TM Update: When human linguists make edits to MT output, the translation memory is updated, so these translations become available for future leverage.
- Caching: All MT translations are cached for 30 days. When the same segment appears again, the system retrieves the cached translation instead of making a new API call, providing improved consistency.
Accessing the AI Hub
Smartling's innovative features and capabilities are automatically embedded in all of your machine and LLM translation processes.
The AI Hub in the Smartling dashboard also offers a centralized place to configure the settings and providers used for your machine and LLM translations. To access it, click AI Hub in the top navigation bar.
The AI Hub is accessible to users with an Account Owner or Project Manager role.
Navigating the AI Hub
If you prefer watching over reading, join the Smartling Community for a video walkthrough.
From the AI Hub, you can:
1. Track your MT and AI Toolkit usage
If you are using the AI Toolkit, check the AI Toolkit Dashboard to monitor its benefits and better understand how Smartling's AI-powered features help optimize your translation processes.
From the Reporting section of the AI Hub, track your account's MT usage and AI Toolkit usage at any time to avoid any overages or bottlenecks.
- The MT Usage report shows the number of words that were translated with an MT provider, by using either an MT workflow, Smartling's MT API, or one of Smartling's account-wide MT integrations.
- The AI Toolkit Usage report shows the number of words that went through a translation step where at least one feature of Smartling's AI Toolkit is enabled.
If you have an active Smartling AI Subscription, you can also track your combined spending and remaining capacity from the AI Subscription Usage Report.
2. Set up and customize your preferred translation providers using Profiles
From the Settings menu, you can select and set up your MT or LLM translation providers:
- If you would like to bring your own key (BYOK) for one of the supported MT or LLM providers, you will need to use the Credentials page to store your own provider key.
- Once your provider credentials have been stored in Smartling, Profiles (also referred to as MT Profiles or LLM Profiles) allow you to further customize the translation output for each provider, and apply machine or LLM translations where needed.
Your new Smartling account already comes with a pre-configured MT Profile called Smartling Auto Select, which intelligently routes your content to the best-suited NMT engine. In addition to Smartling Auto Select, you can create as many custom Profiles as needed to use an MT provider or LLM of your choice.
3. Get an instant translation using an MT or LLM Profile
Once a Profile has been created and customized, it can be used to translate your content in the Smartling platform or through one of the instant MT integrations.
The Instant MT tab allows you to enable and configure the Profiles you want to use to translate your content with one of Smartling's instant MT integrations, with Smartling's MT API, or to provide MT suggestions in the CAT Tool. For more information, see Machine Translation Settings.
For information on how to enable MT or LLM Profiles in machine translation workflows, read our documentation on Setting Up a Machine Translation Workflow.
