MT workflows and integrations
All of the following ways of utilizing machine translation are comprised of Smartling's AI Hub*:
-
Machine translation workflows:
Any content uploaded to the Smartling platform can be translated using a machine translation workflow, either with or without a human editor in the loop. Smartling also offers a range of innovative AI features to help enhance and refine the machine translation output. -
Instant MT integrations:
Display machine translations directly on your website (by using Smartling's Global Delivery Network) or in a range of connecting platforms (e.g., ServiceNow or Zendesk), without needing to upload the content to the Smartling platform. -
MT API:
Smartling's publicly available MT API allows you to integrate machine translations with any application used by your organization. -
Smartling Translate:
Smartling Translate is Smartling's easy-to-use machine translation portal, allowing you to translate text or files instantly without any configuration.
For each of these use cases, you can select your preferred MT provider or LLM and customize the translation output by integrating your linguistic assets.
* Please reach out to your Customer Success Manager for information on pricing inclusions.
Optional add-ons to enhance the MT output
-
AI-Enhanced Glossary Term Insertion is included as part of the AI Hub. This feature enhances the functionality of Glossary Term Insertion in Machine Translations.
As a glossary term is inserted in a machine translated string, its inflection needs to be adapted to the surrounding sentence structure. By using an LLM to correct the grammatical structure, AI-Enhanced Glossary Term Insertion significantly improves the probability of a correct translation output, which adheres to your preferred terminology. - As an optional add-on, Smartling's AI Toolkit allows you to further optimize your machine translation workflows. The AI Toolkit is a bundle of innovative, AI-powered features that help enhance the machine translation output and gain insight into the expected quality level.
- Smartling also offers custom MT engine training. This service can help significantly enhance the machine translation output quality and tailor it to your stylistic and terminology preferences.
AI Hub features in the CAT Tool
The AI Hub also helps human linguists work more efficiently, by providing AI-enhanced features in the CAT Tool:
-
MT suggestions in the CAT Tool:
Even if you opt for a human translation workflow, machine translation can still play an important role in helping linguists translate your content more efficiently. Machine translation suggestions in the CAT Tool provide a first base translation, which can be amended and edited by the linguist. -
Quality Check AI Correction:
For strings with a quality check error, translators can automatically generate a fix via Quality Check AI Correction. For many types of quality checks, this allows linguists to fix errors at the click of a button.
Benefits of Smartling's AI Hub
With Smartling, you can seamlessly integrate MT or LLM translation into your localization processes while still benefiting from the control and scalability of a Translation Management System (TMS).
Reliability
- String integrity: Whether you use Smartling-provisioned MT engines or bring your own API key (BYOK), the AI Hub applies pre- and post-processing rules to ensure no strings are broken and workflows continue uninterrupted.
- Automatic fallback system: If the first-choice engine fails, a fallback engine will be invoked to ensure the translation is delivered.
Cost optimization & reporting
- SmartMatch savings: In a workflow that uses MT, all segments are first checked against translation memory. SmartMatches are leveraged and are not sent to the MT engine or LLM service, significantly reducing costs.
- Reporting: MT workflow reports, engine performance comparison reports, and Edit Distance reports are available both out of the box and on demand.
Customization
- By integrating your linguistic assets, such as your glossary or translation memory, the translation output is more tailored to your organization's tone and terminology.
- Additional AI features can be used to further smooth and enhance the translation output.
Quality & consistency enhancement
- Custom translation rules: Post-translation rules are applied to capture stylistic preferences and locale-specific conventions.
- Dynamic workflows: Machine translated content can pass through dynamic workflows where the translations can be post-edited or reviewed by humans if a different quality level is desired.
- Instant TM Update: When human linguists make edits to MT output, the translation memory is updated, so these translations become available for future leverage.
- Caching: All MT translations are cached for 30 days. When the same segment appears again, the system retrieves the cached translation instead of making a new API call, providing improved consistency.

From the AI Hub, you can:
1. Track your MT and AI Toolkit usage
If you are using the AI Toolkit, check the AI Toolkit Dashboard to monitor its benefits and better understand how Smartling's AI-powered features help optimize your translation processes.
From the Reporting section of the AI Hub, track your account's MT words and AI Toolkit words usage at any time to avoid any overages or bottlenecks.
- The MT Words report shows the number of words that were translated with an MT provider, by using either an MT workflow, Smartling's MT API, or one of Smartling’s account-wide MT integrations. Click here for more information.
- The AI Words report shows the number of words that went through a translation step where at least one feature of Smartling’s AI Toolkit is enabled. Click here for more information.
2. Choose your preferred LLM Providers for Smartling's AI features
From the Settings menu, you can access the LLM Providers page. Here, you can disable specific LLM providers which may be used by Smartling's AI features and workflows.
For more information, see LLM Provider Settings.
3. Set up and customize your preferred translation providers and profiles
From the Settings menu, you can select and set up your MT or LLM translation providers:
- If you would like to bring your own key (BYOK) for one of the supported MT or LLM providers, you will need to use the Credentials page to store your own provider key.
- Once your provider credentials have been stored in Smartling, Translation Profiles (also referred to as MT Profiles or LLM Profiles) allow you to further customize the translation output for each provider, and apply machine or LLM translations where needed.
Tip: Your new Smartling account already comes with a pre-configured MT Profile called Smartling Auto Select, which intelligently routes your content to the best suited NMT engine.
In addition to Smartling Auto Select, you can create as many custom MT Profiles as needed to use an MT provider or LLM of your choice. Click here for more information.
4. Use Translation Profiles to translate your content
Once an MT or LLM Profile has been created and customized, it can then be used to translate your content in the Smartling platform, or using one of our instant MT integrations.
The Instant MT tab allows you to enable and configure the Translation Profiles you want to use to translate your content with one of Smartling's instant MT integrations, with Smartling's MT API, or to provide MT suggestions in the CAT Tool. For more information, click here.
Tip: For information on how to enable Translation Profiles in Machine Translation workflows, read our documentation on Setting Up a Machine Translation Workflow.
