MT Profiles are a collection of configurations for the MT engines and LLMs used to translate your content in Smartling. Once your provider credentials have been stored in Smartling, MT Profiles allow you to further customize the translation output for each provider.
MT Profiles can then be assigned to a machine translation workflow. You can also use your MT Profile to provide MT suggestions in the CAT Tool, to make use of Smartling's MT API, or to display machine translations directly where they are needed with a range of MT integrations.
How to access MT Profiles
To view, manage or create MT Profiles, navigate to your Account Settings > Machine Translation Settings.
MT Profiles can be created, edited, and managed from the Profiles tab of the Machine Translation Settings.
Your Smartling account already comes with a pre-configured MT Profile: Smartling's proprietary Smartling Auto Select profile automatically selects the highest performing MT provider for each language and doesn't require any setup to get started.
If you would like to use a specific MT provider or LLM of your choice, you can create additional MT Profiles.
How to create a new MT Profile
Before you begin creating a new MT Profile, please ensure that the provider credentials for the MT provider or LLM of your choice have been stored in Smartling:
- If the Smartling team provisions provider credentials for you, they will automatically be available to select when you create a new MT Profile. They do not need to be added to the Provider Credentials page.
- If you would like to bring your own provider key, please follow these instructions to add them to the Provider Credentials tab of your Machine Translation Settings.
Once the credentials for the provider of your choice have been provisioned and stored in Smartling, you can now create an MT profile to further customize the translation output and apply translations with the selected provider.
- Click Account Settings > Machine Translation Settings
- Click on the Profiles tab
- Click on Create MT Profile
-
Select the desired MT or LLM provider from the list of supported providers.
- Alternatively, if you would like to use a translation workflow to simply copy the source text over to the target language, select the provider "Copy Source-to-Target".
-
Define a name for the new MT Profile.
- We recommend choosing a name that indicates the selected provider, as well as any additional specifications. Example:

(Optional) Enable Profanity Masking. This feature is only available for MT profiles using Microsoft (see Documentation) or Amazon (see Documentation). The configuration varies depending on the engine:

You will see a Profanity Action Value field with the following options:- NoAction (default) - Profane terms or phrases will not be masked.
- Marked - Profane words or phrases are replaced with asterisks.
-
Deleted - Profane words or phrases are removed without replacement. If the source text consists only of profane words or phrases, the translation output will be empty.
You will see a Profanity Masking checkbox.- Select the checkbox to enable profanity masking, profane words and phrases will be replaced with special characters.
- Click Save to create the MT Profile.
The MT Profile is now created and can be accessed anytime from the Profiles tab under Machine Translation Settings.
TM Match Insertion
To customize the translation output further with existing translations from your Translation Memory, you can enable TM Match Insertion (optional).
How to edit an MT Profile
- From your Account Settings, access your Machine Translation Settings
- Click into the Profiles tab
- Click on the MT Profile name you want to edit
- The Edit MT Profile dialog appears where you can edit and test MT Profile credentials and define new language-specific credentials and rules.
You cannot edit Smartling Auto Select.
How to delete an MT Profile
- From your Account Settings, access your Machine Translation Settings
- Click into the Profiles tab
- Click the ellipses under Actions > Delete
You cannot delete an MT Profile that is assigned to a workflow. You need to re-assign the workflow step to another translation option. If you unassign an MT Profile while translations are in progress, translation progress will stop. The translations will remain in the translation step until the step is reassigned.
What's next?
The MT Profile can now be used to translate your content, either within the Smartling platform (using an MT workflow or MT suggestions in the CAT Tool), or through one of Smartling's MT integrations to display machine translations directly where needed.
- MT Profiles can be used as a translation provider in a machine translation workflow.
Machine translation workflows allow you to translate any content in the Smartling platform, using your preferred provider and configurations. For more information, please visit this article.
- MT Profiles can be used to translate content with Smartling's MT API or one of Smartling's MT integrations, which provide machine translations directly where they should be displayed - without the need to upload the content into the Smartling platform first.
