The AI Toolkit, as well as Smartling's AI-powered workflows and LLM integrations, leverage Large Language Models from various different providers to enhance cost savings and to improve the quality of your machine translations.
By default, Smartling's AI features are LLM-agnostic. Smartling automatically selects the best-performing LLM provider for each AI feature, continuously evaluating and updating models and prompts to ensure the optimal provider is always used.
If your organization has specific privacy and security policies, you can choose your preferred LLM providers from the LLM Providers page. The choices you make there are respected everywhere Smartling uses LLMs.
Account Owners and Project Managers can view LLM Providers settings. However, only Account Owners can modify these account-level settings. Project Managers have read-only access.
What your LLM provider choices affect
The providers you enable or disable on the LLM Providers page apply across all of the following areas. Each of these can use any provider you have left enabled, and will automatically select the best-suited one:
- The AI Toolkit
- AI-powered workflows, including AI Translation (AIT) and AI-Powered Human Translation (AIHT)
- Smartling Auto Select LLM
- Smartling Language Adaptation
The following features are exceptions: they can only be used with specific providers, and become unavailable if the required providers are disabled:
- Quality Check AI Correction — requires OpenAI. If OpenAI is disabled, this feature becomes unavailable.
- Smartling Translate's AI Editor — requires OpenAI or Vertex AI. If both are disabled, this feature becomes unavailable.
- LQA Agent — requires Anthropic. If Anthropic is disabled, this feature becomes unavailable.
Accessing the LLM Providers settings
- From the top navigation bar of your Smartling dashboard, access the AI Hub.
- Click into the LLM Providers tab.
Tip: The LLM Providers page allows you to manage the use of Large Language Models for AI features that enhance the translation output, but it does not impact the use of LLMs as your primary translation provider. For information about LLMs as translation providers, see Translating with LLMs in Smartling.
Managing AI cloud platforms
From the AI Hub > LLM Providers > AI Cloud Platforms, you can manage which LLM providers are enabled for your account.
By default, all of the following providers are enabled, and their LLMs may be used for any AI-powered feature throughout the Smartling platform:
- OpenAI: If this provider is enabled, Smartling may use all current GPT models.
- Microsoft Azure: If this provider is enabled, Smartling may use all current GPT models.
- Anthropic: If this provider is enabled, Smartling may use all current Claude models.
- Vertex AI by Google: If this provider is enabled, Smartling may use all current Gemini models.
- Amazon Bedrock by Amazon: If this provider is enabled, Smartling may use all current Nova and Claude models.
- WatsonX by IBM (coming soon): This provider will be available soon.
Smartling will automatically select the best suited provider for LLM-powered functionalities and workflows throughout the platform.
Disabling individual LLM providers
By default, all supported LLM providers are enabled.
To disable individual AI cloud platforms:
- Switch off the toggle next to the provider name.
- In the pop-up dialog, confirm that you would like to disable the selected provider.
Example:
Warning: Disabling certain LLM providers may impact the effectiveness of Smartling's AI features and produce varying results.
Once a provider is disabled, Smartling will use only the remaining, enabled providers for LLM functionalities, and will automatically select the best suited platform from among them. This applies to every area listed under What your LLM provider choices affect — including Smartling Auto Select LLM and Smartling Language Adaptation. Keep in mind that Quality Check AI Correction, Smartling Translate's AI Editor, and the LQA Agent require specific providers and will become unavailable if those providers are disabled.
Disabling the use of LLMs in Smartling
By default, Smartling uses Large Language Models for platform-wide LLM integrations, as well as for the AI Toolkit.
If desired, the use of LLMs can be disabled completely. To do so, please contact your Smartling Customer Success Manager.
Warning: By completely disabling the use of Large Language Models for your account, the AI Toolkit, as well as features like AI-Enhanced Glossary Term Insertion, and workflow options like AI Translation (AIT) or AI-Powered Human Translation (AIHT) by Smartling Language Services, will no longer work as expected.
