This article is for Translators and Editors.
In the Smartling CAT tool, before submitting your translations, you'll need to save them (if you're a Translator), and confirm them (if you're an Editor).
Save Translations (for Translators)
It's beneficial to save your work as often as possible, not only to preserve your work, but to allow for maximum translation memory leverage. When you save a string, you can continue to make further updates (and re-save) it, provided that you haven't already submitted the string.
Save individual strings: Once a translation has been entered in the segment, click the check mark.
Save a string with multiple segments: When a string contains multiple segments, each segment must be translated before the string can be saved. Click the check mark once all segments of the string have been translated.
Save in bulk: Click Save Page to save multiple translated strings at once. The bulk save functionality will save the strings for the page you're currently on. Each page has a limit of 100 strings. If you have more than 100 strings that need to be bulk saved, you'll need to click to the next page.
Save certain strings at once:
- Use shift + click to select a batch of strings above or below the active string. The active string automatically gets selected. Click Save (or Submit).
- Use command + click on a Mac, or Ctrl + click on a PC to select specific strings. The active string is not automatically selected. Click Save (or Submit).
Clicking again within the editor will deselect strings. Clicking outside of the editor will not deselect your selected strings.
You can use the default keyboard shortcut: Command + S (Mac) or Control + S (Windows) to save your work. See Configure CAT Tool Settings and Keyboard Shortcuts for more information.
Save Translations (for Editors or Reviewers)
It's beneficial to confirm your work as often as possible, not only to preserve your work, but to allow for maximum translation memory leverage. When you confirm a string, you can continue to make further updates (and re-save) it, provided that you haven't already submitted the string.
Save individual strings: Click the checkmark for the designated segment. The checkmark will then appear next to the segment. A translation must already be entered in the target field in order for a string to be confirmed.
Save in bulk: Click Save Page to save multiple translated strings at once. The bulk save functionality will save the strings for the page you're currently on. Each page has a limit of 100 strings. If you have more than 100 strings that need to be bulk saved, you'll need to click to the next page. This action saves the strings but doesn't submit them.
Save a string with multiple segments: Click the checkmark for the designated segment. The checkmark will then appear next to the entire string. A translation must already be entered in the target field for each segment of the string to be able to confirm the string.
Save Certain Strings at Once: Use shift + click to select a batch of strings above or below the active string. The active string automatically gets selected. Click Save to save only the strings that you've selected. (Your "Save All" button will have changed from "Save All" to "Save" when using this feature.)
The default keyboard shortcut is Command + S for Mac and Control + S for Windows. See Configure CAT Tool Settings and Keyboard Shortcuts for more information.
Submit Translations
Submitting translations moves content to the next step in the workflow. Submitting work as often as possible will help ensure overall efficiency of the translation process, resulting in optimal content velocity. Once a string has been submitted, you'll no longer have access to those strings in that workflow step.
To submit content:
Click Submit/Submit Translations at the top of the CAT tool. You'll be presented with two options:
- Submit Saved Translations (for Translators) / Confirmed Translated Strings (for Editors): Move only those strings that have been saved/confirmed to the next step.
- Submit All Translations (for Translators) / All Translated Strings (for Editors): Moves all strings with a translation present to the next step, regardless of whether they've been saved/confirmed. This action will save/confirm the translation at the same time as submission.
The same method for saving certain strings at once also applies to submitting certain strings at once. Once you've selected the strings, click Submit (to only submit those strings).
- Use shift + click to select a batch of strings before or after the active string.
- Use command + click on a Mac, or Ctrl + click on a PC to select specific strings. The active string is not automatically selected.
The bulk-submit functionality will submit the strings for the page you're currently on. Each page has a limit of 100 strings. If you have more than 100 strings that need to be bulk submitted, you'll need to click to the next page.
