AI Hub's Instant MT Settings allow you to control which translation Profiles are used for features that display machine translations directly where needed: in a connector, plugin, the GDN, Smartling Translate, the MT API, or as suggestions in the CAT Tool.
Unlike a standard translation job, content translated this way is not uploaded to Smartling in the form of strings and does not go through a translation workflow. Instead, machine translations are displayed directly where they are needed, with minimal configuration for near-instant results.
Content translated this way does not write to translation memory. Instant MT counts toward your account's AI Hub usage, which you can track in the AI Hub Usage Report. CAT Tool instant MT suggestions are the exception; they do not count towards AI Hub words.
Instant MT is powered by the MT or LLM Profile that you assign to each integration. This article explains how to configure Instant MT for each supported integration.
Looking for the other AI Hub settings? See Profiles, Credentials, and LLM Providers at the end of this article, or the overview in Smartling's AI Hub.
How to access Instant MT settings
From the top navigation bar of your Smartling dashboard, access the AI Hub.
Then click into the Instant MT section.
Account Owners can configure Instant MT for every integration. Project Managers can configure most integrations, but have view-only access to the CAT Tool and GDN tabs.
Instant MT
From the Instant MT tab, you can enable and configure the Profiles you want to use to translate your content with one of Smartling's MT integrations, or to provide MT suggestions in the CAT Tool.
The configuration model is the same for every integration: enable MT, choose a Default Profile, and optionally define Language-Pair Configurations and glossary term insertion. How a translation is triggered and displayed differs by integration, so each section below links to the relevant documentation for those details.
This article covers the setup for CAT Tool, Smartling Translate, MT API, and the GDN. For connectors and plugins, see Connectors and plugins below.
Using MT or LLM Profiles in the CAT Tool
- Go to AI Hub > Instant MT
- Navigate to the CAT Tool tab
- Toggle the Enable MT in the CAT Tool switch on
- Toggle the switch off to disable machine translation
- Choose a Default Profile from the dropdown
- (Optional) Define Language-Pair Configurations to use different Profiles for different languages in the CAT Tool. For example, you can define "Google MT" as your default profile and "Microsoft MT" for French and Spanish.
- (Optional) Select one or more glossaries to enable Glossary Term Insertion for Machine Translation.
Tip: For more information, read MT in the CAT Tool.
Using Profiles in Smartling Translate
- Go to AI Hub > Instant MT
- Navigate to the Smartling Translate tab
- Toggle the Enable MT in Smartling Translate switch on
- Toggle the switch off to disable machine translation
- Choose a Default Profile from the dropdown
- (Optional) Define Language-Pair Configurations to use different Profiles for different languages in Smartling Translate. For example, you can define "Google MT" as your default profile and "Microsoft MT" for French and Spanish.
- (Optional) Select one or more glossaries to enable Glossary Term Insertion for Machine Translation.
- Select your desired insertion type: Standard glossary term insertion or AI-enhanced glossary term insertion.
Tip: For more information, read our documentation on Smartling Translate.
Using Profiles to translate content with Smartling's MT API
- Go to AI Hub > Instant MT
- Navigate to the MT API tab
- Toggle the Enable Machine Translation for MT API switch on to enable machine translation
- Toggle the switch off to disable machine translation

- (Optional) Select one or more glossaries to enable Glossary Term Insertion for Machine Translation.
The MT API tab is shared. The Profile you select here is also used by Smartling's MCP server and by the connectors and plugins that do not have their own dedicated tab (for example, the Adobe plugins). Any change made here affects all of those integrations.
Tip: For more information, read our API documentation on Machine Translation.
Using Profiles for site-wide machine translations with the GDN
To enable site-wide machine translation with the Global Delivery Network:
- In your GDN project, click the Settings tab
- On the left-hand menu, click Machine Translation

Next, configure your preferred MT Profile to translate your website:
- Go to AI Hub > Instant MT
- Navigate to the GDN tab

Tip: For more information, read our documentation on the GDN.
Connectors and plugins
Instant MT is also available for Smartling's connectors and plugins, including the Zendesk Support Plugin, the ServiceNow Connector, the Salesforce Service Cloud Connector, the Figma Plugin, the Adobe plugins, the AEM, Drupal, and WordPress connectors, and hosted connectors such as Iterable.
Profile selection works the same way (on the relevant connector tab, or on the shared MT API tab), but how you request and receive an instant translation differs by integration. For the full configuration and request flow, and the list of supported connectors and plugins, see Instant Translation for Connectors & Plugins.
Profiles
Instant MT is powered by an MT or LLM Profile, which you create in the Profiles tab of the AI Hub. The Profiles tab also includes Smartling's proprietary Smartling Auto Select LLM, which intelligently routes your content to the highest-performing model.
For full instructions, see Creating and Managing MT Profiles or Managing LLM Profiles and Prompts.
Credentials
To use an MT provider or LLM of your choice, store your provider key and credentials in the Credentials tab of the AI Hub. The credentials can then be added to a Profile and used for translation in Smartling.
For full instructions, see MT and LLM Provider Credentials (BYOK). For the list of supported providers, see supported MT providers and LLMs.
LLM Providers
From the LLM Providers tab, you can choose which LLM providers Smartling's AI Toolkit, AI-powered workflows, and LLM integrations are allowed to use. By default, Smartling is LLM-agnostic and automatically selects the best-performing model for each AI feature.
For full instructions, see LLM Provider Settings: Choose Your Preferred LLM Providers.
