After you've submitted Figma content for translation, you'll need to check on the status and apply the translations when they're completed. You can monitor the translation progress and apply completed translations to Figma from Smartling from the Translation Status page.
From this page, you can select which pages and target locales you would like to apply translations to, giving you full control over when translations are applied to the Figma file.
Alternatively, a Smartling user can download the translated files from Smartling and manually import them into Figma.
Although the Smartling Figma plugin is visible in the Figma browser, it is currently only accessible via the Figma Desktop app.
Check Translation Status and Apply Translations
To check translation status and apply your translations, please follow these steps:
- Launch Figma Desktop App
- Open your Figma file
-
In the Figma menu (top left), click Plugins > Development > Smartling > Translation Status.
The plugin will check for all translation request submissions for the Figma file, identified by its unique Document ID. If no submissions are found, you can click Submit to request the content for translation or click Import to import translations manually.
Any files submitted for translation prior to April 15, 2024, will not be detected. You will need to resubmit the file for translation or manually import the translations. You can leverage existing translations using SmartMatch.
If translations are detected for the document, you will see the list of job(s) that contain translations for the Figma file.
- Click Next to see submitted locales for each page. You can also see the translation status, date translations were applied if applicable, and any errors related to the submission.
-
Select the page(s) and language(s) to which you would like to apply translations.
- Click Apply Translations. The delivery progress window will appear, where you can see the details and status of the translation delivery process.
- Once the process is complete, click Finish to close the translation status screen.
Applying Translations
Ideally, you should wait until the Translation Status indicates that the content has been Translated, before applying translations.
If you apply translations before the content is completed, you may find some strings in your Figma page untranslated.
Each time you apply translations, a new page is created under Figma Pages for each language. The target locale is appended to the end to indicate a translated page, e.g. Dashboard Login [German (Germany)]. Each language is considered a new page within Figma. You can add new content, change content or make any modifications without having an impact on the source page. After you adjust the layout so that all translations are properly displayed, you can export an offline file for each language, if needed.
Considerations
The presence and placement of tags in translations can impact how translations are applied in Figma. If a source string contains HTML tags, please ensure the same tags are present in the translation. The tag structure between the source string and translation should match to avoid any issues with applying translations in Figma. Avoid nesting tags in translations, as this is also known to cause issues.
