System notifications keep you informed about the progress and completion of long-running actions in Smartling, such as bulk string actions, file uploads, and connector submissions. Notifications appear in the dashboard so you can continue working while actions process in the background.
Where to find system notifications
To view your system notifications, click the bell icon in the top navigation bar of the dashboard. The bell icon displays a badge when you have unread notifications.
How system notifications work
When you perform an action that takes time to complete, Smartling generates a notification to track its progress. The notification updates as the action progresses, for example, from In progress to Completed.
If an action fails or something goes wrong, the notification lets you know the action failed or completed with a warning so that you can follow up as needed.
Notifications are automatically cleared after a period of time, so your notifications list stays current and relevant.
Who can see system notifications
You can see notifications for actions you have access to. For example, if an Account Owner uploads a file to a project that you have access to as a Project Manager, you can see the file upload notification. If you do not have access to the project, you will not see the notification.
Read and unread notifications
Notifications you have not viewed are marked as unread. A notification is automatically marked as read after it has been displayed on your screen for 3 seconds.
You can manually mark a notification as unread to remind yourself to return to it later. Notifications that you manually mark as unread are not automatically marked as read again. You must mark them as read yourself.
Grouped notifications
Smartling groups notifications with the same name to keep your notifications list easy to scan. For example, if you upload several files in a row, the file upload notifications appear together as a group instead of as separate entries.
Types of system notifications
Notifications are generated for actions that run in the background and may take some time to complete. Examples include:
- File uploads
- Bulk string actions, such as adding strings to a job, assigning or unassigning strings, and manually prepublishing strings
- Connector activity, such as bulk submissions or translation delivery
- LQA activity, such as LQA sampling or submitting content to an LQA project
This is not a complete list. Smartling continues to add notifications for additional actions.
Minimum threshold for string action notifications
To reduce notification noise, bulk string actions must involve at least 200 strings before a notification is generated. Actions involving fewer than 200 strings complete without generating a notification.
Take action from a system notification
Many notifications include a link that takes you directly to the relevant item, so you can check the result without searching for it. Depending on the notification, the link might open the project dashboard, the uploaded file, the LQA job, or the affected asset.
Notifications for bulk connector submissions that are in progress also include a Cancel option. You can use this option to stop a submission if it was started by mistake.
