Each language you configure in a Smartling project has a display name and an underlying locale code. Display names appear in the dashboard. Locale codes are required when connecting content platforms to Smartling via a connector or API, or when importing TMX files.
Smartling locale codes are based on two ISO standards:
-
Language codes follow ISO 639-1 — the international standard for two-letter language codes (e.g.,
enfor English,frfor French). -
Country codes follow ISO 3166-1 — the international standard for two-letter country codes (e.g.,
USfor United States,FRfor France).
A full Locale ID combines both standards using a hyphen: [language-code]-[country-code] (e.g., en-US, fr-FR).
A full list of supported locales is available in Supported Languages.
