When should you create a new project?

The number of projects your Smartling account needs depends on a few factors. Generally, you should create a separate project in the following situations:

• Different content types: Different content often calls for a different tone and terminology. Legal content, for example, reads very differently from creative marketing assets. Separate projects let you set clear guidelines for each content type so that linguists can meet your expectations, and the ability to set a different default workflow per language in each project makes it easy to apply the right translation options and steps to each type.
• A separate translation memory: Smartling lets you reuse previous translations to optimize translation cost, speed and consistency. If you prefer not to reuse certain translations (for example, highly creative content that is less of a literal translation), create a separate project and Linguistic Package for them.
• A different language configuration: Each project can have only one source language. If you want to translate from a different source language, or the direction of your language pair changes, you need a new project.
• Multiple integrations: If you use more than one integration to send content to Smartling, use a separate project for each integration or connector so that all integration settings can be configured correctly.
• Different teams: If teams across your organization manage their own translation activities in a decentralized way, separate projects let them work independently with different workflows, vendors and processes, while shared company-wide resources such as your glossary remain available to all.
