Smartling Auto Select (MT) is Smartling's proprietary MT profile that automatically routes your content to the best-suited MT engine based on content type, target languages, and other criteria. This saves you the time and cost of testing each provider individually.
If the chosen engine cannot provide a quality translation, Auto Select (MT) automatically retries with the next best-suited engine. If translation is still not possible after two attempts, the content is routed to the Fallback Method, typically a human translation workflow step. The evaluation continuously evolves as MT engines improve, ensuring your content is always routed to the best available option.
For all languages, Auto Select (MT) chooses the best-performing general engine that supports the target language.
As of Q1 2026, our research shows that LLMs outperform Auto Select (MT) for the vast majority of languages. We recommend using Smartling Auto Select LLM or creating a dedicated LLM Profile for a specific provider instead of Auto Select (MT). Continue below for more details.

Smartling Auto Select LLM is a separate Profile that uses LLMs with RAG to translate your content. Our latest research shows that Auto Select LLM outperforms Auto Select (MT) for the vast majority of languages.
If you want more control over the translation prompt and parameters, you can also create a dedicated LLM Profile for a specific provider. Both Auto Select LLM and a dedicated LLM provider outperform Auto Select (MT) and are the recommended approach.
