The Smartling Salesforce Marketing Cloud Connector (SFMC) allows you to streamline and centralize the translation of your Salesforce Marketing Cloud content. Translations are requested from within the Smartling platform, and translated content is automatically sent to your Salesforce Marketing Cloud instance.
The Salesforce Marketing Cloud (SFMC) Connector supports translation of the following content types:
Translations are returned once 100% of authorized strings are translated into the target language. If source content is found in the translated asset, this may be because that content is in Awaiting Authorization in Smartling. To ensure all content is translated in the target language, authorize all strings for translation.
To automate this process
- Go to your Smartling SFMC project
- Click on Project Settings > Salesforce Marketing Cloud Settings
- Click the resubmit changed content dropdown, and select Auto
- Additionally, consult your Customer Success Manager about enabling Auto Authorize
Salesforce Marketing Cloud Asset List
Once you have connected your SFMC account, you will find SFMC content in the SFMC tab in your Smartling project.
Here you will see a flat list of your SFMC assets, filtered by a specific content type. Each content type is managed separately from within the Smartling platform, allowing greater visibility and control over the translation management. Every time you toggle between each of the SFMC content types within the Smartling platform, Smartling will check SFMC for new content. Email is the default content filter selection.
In any content selection, you can view the Asset Name, the Smartling translation status, and the Last-Modified date. The last-modified date in Smartling is synced with the last-modified date in SFMC.
If your SFMC Connector is configured to manually check for changes to source content, an Outdated column will be present in the Asset List. Each time source content has been updated in SFMC, a tick will be seen under the Outdated column, beside the asset.
Asset Details
Click the information icon beside the asset name, to access the Asset Details page. Here you can see further information on that asset, including the translation status for each language. From here, you can also Request Translations or Export Translations for that specific asset.
Email content is a single entity of content and will be displayed in Smartling according to the nesting structure in SFMC. When Email is the selected content type, the first list on display is your email folder lists as seen in SFMC. You can select the folder and Request Translations to translate all assets within the folder. Alternatively, you can click the folder to enter it and find and select specific assets for translation.
As you navigate within the folder, a breadcrumb will display above the Asset List. The breadcrumb is a representation of their current position in the SFMC hierarchy and structure for emails. This breadcrumb will update as you navigate within the structure.
Content Builder Email
Content Builder is SFMC's content management tool that consolidates images, documents, and content in a single location for use in the Marketing Cloud. This content type consists of a collection of different assets which can be used as blocks of content for email templates, reducing the level of effort required to create emails.
Data Extension / Multirow Data Extension
In SFMC, a data extension is a table that contains variable email content, which can be used in either of the above two content types. Learn how to prepare data extensions for translation in SFMC. The translation of multirow data extensions is now supported in the SFMC Connector, with Visual Context.
Note: Data extensions have since been deprecated. This asset type is only visible in older Smartling projects. Multirow data extensions offer the same functionality.
Tip: Contact your Customer Success Manager or Solutions Architect for steps in setting up Visual Context for Data Extension translation.
Content Block
Content Blocks are reusable modular blocks of content. When selected as the content type for translation, you can further refine the search by choosing a block type; HTML Blocks, Free Form, Code Snippets, Dynamic Content, and Layout.
Translated blocks are delivered and stored as a separate block, meaning a translated block is created for each language.
Note: When translating emails, content blocks contained in emails are ingested for translation.
Search & filters
When you navigate to the asset list via your connector project's Salesforce tab, you can view all the content pulled in from SFMC. On the left side of the page, you will find several filters including:
Salesforce filters
- Asset Type: Filter by Salesforce asset type.
- Search: Allows you to search by asset title. You can only search for one asset at a time; comma-separated search is not supported.
- Block Type (Content Blocks only)
- Data Modified (Content Builder Emails only): The date the asset was last modified in SFMC.
- Date Created (Content Builder Emails only): The date the asset was originally created in SFMC.
-
Tags (Content Builder Emails only): Filter assets by associated tags or labels.
To use this filter, you must have the proper permissions in your SFMC package configuration. See the SFMC Migration Guide for details.
Smartling filters
-
Smartling Status:
Completed - Translations were successfully delivered from Smartling to SFMC.
Failed - The asset submission failed, or the translation delivery failed.
In Progress - The asset has been successfully sent to Smartling from SFMC, and the translation process has commenced but is not yet completed. If there is a case where translations are complete but a network issue occurs, the translations will remain in progress until the SFMC Connector delivers the translations to SFMC on a successful retry.
New - The asset is in the process of being sent for a new translation request. For example, if changes were made to the source content and your SFMC Connector is configured to automatically send the new content for translation. The asset could be sitting in submission queue or sitting in awaiting authorization.
Not Translated - The asset has never been submitted for translation.
Translated - The asset was translated, but translations have not been delivered. -
Language:
Filter by target language.
Sort
You can sort the asset list by SFMC structure (default), asset name (ascending/descending), or Salesforce ID (ascending/descending).
Please note that filtering and sorting options may vary depending on the content type. Not all content types support sorting and filtering, and available options may change based on your selections.
