Smartling's Data Access Tool for Business Intelligence

Smartling's Data Access tool allows you to import your Smartling data into your own Tableau instance or other Business Intelligence (BI) tool for deeper data analysis and integration into your own data repositories.

How It Works

Smartling provides credentials to an AWS S3 bucket where reports are stored in CSV format. You can then download the files and import them into your BI tool of choice.

The reports are refreshed on a set schedule. You can view when a report was last updated in the "Modified" column. Each CSV file contains up to three years of data, depending on your start date with Smartling and the dataset. Each dataset can be used on its own, it is not necessary to join between files.

Report data is refreshed every 24 hours. You can see when a report was last updated in the “Modified” column.

Getting Started

Interested in using Smartling's Data Access tool? Please contact your Smartling Customer Success Manager to activate this feature for your account.

First, set up Data Access in Smartling. Then, follow the instructions to access the reporting data in your AWS S3 Bucket. After you have retrieved the data, you can import it into your own BI environment.

Setup Data Access in Smartling

    1. Navigate to Account Settings > Integrations & Developer Tools > Data Access.

    2. Next, click Generate Credentials and enter a name for the credentials. These will be the credentials you use to access your S3 Bucket. Once you have entered a name, click Create.

    3. A window will appear with your Bucket, Region, Access Key Id, and Secret Access Key.

Be sure to take note of your Secret Access Key, as you will not be able to access it after closing the modal window. You will need the Secret Access Key to access your S3 Bucket. Use the Copy Credentials button to copy your credentials in JSON format.

      When finished, click Close.

    4. Under Scheduled Reports you can view all reports that are available in your S3 Bucket.

If this is your first time using Smartling's Data Access tool, no reports will be listed. To have reports added to your account, please contact your Customer Success Manager. A list of all available reports can be found below.

Access Reports in Your S3 Bucket

To access the reports in your S3 bucket, you need to have an AWS account. If you do not already have an AWS login you can create a free tier account.

To retrieve the data:

  1. Access the AWS S3 Bucket using your Access Key Id and Secret Access Key.

    • There are several different ways to access your S3 Bucket. The steps to access the S3 bucket depend on your preferred access method. Since the bucket is owned by Smartling, the bucket will not appear in your AWS UI. You will need to access the bucket programmatically (e.g., via the AWS CLI, Cloudshell, or API) or use a third-party FTP tool such as Cyberduck.

  2. Once you have downloaded the data files from your S3 bucket, you can import them into your Business Intelligence tool for analysis.
