DNT (Do Not Translate) Glossary Terms

For terms which should remain untranslated (such as brand terms or trademarked terms), the "DNT (Do Not Translate)" flag needs to be checked for your project's source language (i.e. the language that you translate from).

DNT In The CAT Tool

In the CAT Tool, a "Do Not Translate" instruction is automatically shown for all target languages.

Setting a Term as DNT

For example, if your Smartling Projects use English (United Kingdom) as a source language, simply enter the DNT term for this language and select the "DNT (Do Not Translate)" checkbox.

DNT for multiple source languages

If you use multiple different source languages across your various Smartling Projects, please set DNT for all of them:

  • Insert the DNT term in the "Term" field for all source languages.

  • Mark all of them as "DNT (Do Not Translate)".

Smartling will now be able to detect the DNT term in any of your source languages.

Overriding DNT with a Language-Specific Translation

If a term should remain untranslated for most languages, but requires an actual translation for a specific language only, you can override the DNT flag by providing a translated term:

  • Enter the DNT term (which should remain untranslated across most languages) in the "Term" field of your Project source language and tick the "DNT (Do Not Translate)" checkbox.

  • For the language which should use an actual translation, insert the translation in the "Term" field.

The linguists translating into this language will now only see the translation; the DNT instruction is no longer shown for this specific language.

For all other target languages, a DNT instruction is still shown.

Finding DNT Terms

In the Glossary, you can find DNT terms by using the Term set as DNT filter. This displays a dropdown menu of all languages in the Glossary. Select a language to display all DNT terms for that language.

Importing DNT Terms in Bulk

Of course, DNT terms can be imported in bulk - for example, when you create a new Glossary or during the process of updating an existing Glossary.

For further details on how to add DNT terms to your Glossary file, please visit our article on Importing DNT Terms or watch our Video Tutorial on Glossary Import & Export.
