Adobe InDesign (INDD) Plugin: Preview Translated Files with Pseudo-Translation

Pseudo-translation is a way of simulating translation without really translating. It replaces the source text with a repeated special character set from other languages. This automated process allows InDesign designers to quickly preview what a translated version of their prototype will look like.

You can use pseudo-translation to:

  • Quickly identify strings that will not be translated.

  • Locate problematic buttons or areas with text overflow.

  • Test fonts to evaluate how they will appear and perform with different sets of characters.

How to pseudo-translate your InDesign file

  1. In your InDesign project, click the Files tab.

  2. Click the Upload Files button.

  3. Select your INDD source file from your locale drive.

  4. Once the file has been successfully uploaded, click the ellipsis (3 dots) > View translation files.

You may see a yellow warning triangle next to the download button. If so, you will be prompted to generate the file for download after clicking Download pseudo translations.

  6. You can then open the downloaded pseudo-translated file in Abode InDesign to view the pseudo-translated version.
