Smartling Overview

New Smartling Experience - Beta

This article is for customers participating in the beta release of the new Smartling experience.  Most of the screenshots below show the classic version with its equivalent in the new experience, as well as steps to navigate to the new screen. There are, however, two new product experiences (the GDN URLs Home page and the new Strings view). Comprehensive updates to our documentation in the Help Center will be done in time for general availability (TBD).

Enabled by Default

By default, when you log in to Smartling, you'll be shown the new experience. All actions that you could do before, you can still do now. You'll be able to try out the new version while still being given the opportunity to revert back to the classic one. No data will be lost regardless of whether or not you continue to use the new experience during this beta release. However, we strongly encourage you to use the new version to help provide us with further feedback. Submit any comments or questions through this form.

To disable/enable the new navigation, log in to Smartling and click the dropdown arrow (at the top right of the page) and edit your profile. Toggle ON/OFF.

New Product Experiences

  • GDN URLs Home page: This is a new experience that has no equivalent in the classic version. A summary of the content in a Global Delivery Network project is presented in a "files"-like grid view, organized by the site's URLs.
  • Strings view: In the new Strings view, you'll be able to see all content across workflow states - for example, "Excluded", "Authorized", and "Awaiting Authorization" can be seen all at once. In addition, for multiple languages, you'll be able to see strings that are "In Progress" or "Completed" at the same time.

New Navigation Experience

Changes to the Smartling Dashboard were done to simplify the user experience, and provide focus on key functions that are needed to perform common tasks. As a best practice, we encourage you to bucket your content into one or more Jobs.

Some items that have changed in the Smartling Dashboard include:

  • Top navigation: This has been simplified to provide fewer links, and to focus on content that is in translation, or will be translated. Account level settings and configurations are still available, accessed from within the Account Settings menu.
  • Project languages: A new settings page where languages can be added to (or removed from) a project, and where the style guide for the language can be configured.
  • User experience updates: Not all pages have the new experience. Due to technical differences in the way that individual pages are coded, for now, several pages only have minimal updates to their core design, and look-and-feel. All pages will eventually be updated to reflect the new experience.

GDN Capture Domain

All new GDN projects now have an automatically configured "capture domain" for each domain that is added to that project. This is a localized domain that can capture content, but uses "pseudo localization" to show all strings rather than the actual translations. In other words, all content that passes through the proxy will appear pseudo-localized.

This is useful because:

  • It's a great way to see what is or isn't getting captured by the GDN, or rather, what is or isn't passing through the proxy.
  • It is an alternative to arbitrarily picking one target language and browsing the site in its translated state (if available).
  • It's easy for the user to read the content and identify what has or hasn't been captured.
