Submitting & Retrieving Content

Sketch

This article is for Account Owners and Project Managers.

The Smartling Sketch plugin allows you to submit content and context directly from Sketch to Smartling for translation, and retrieve the content once it's complete. Smartling supports the Sketch plugin up to and including version 50.2.

Installation

  1. Download the Smartling Sketch Plugin from our Downloads page or the Sketch Plugins Page.
  2. Unzip the file archive, then double click on the smartilng.sketchplugin file.

Once installed, the Smartling plugin will be available from the Plugins menu in Sketch (Plugins > Smartling).

Submit Sketch Content for Translation

  1. Click Plugins > Smarting > Submit page content to Smartling from the Sketch menu.
  2. If you are not already logged into Smartling, you will be asked to login to your account.
  3. Select the Smartling Project from the drop down menu to translate your Sketch content.
  4. Click OK to submit your content or Cancel to exit the menu.
  5. Click Review and Authorize to authorize your content for translation or Close to exit.

Only one Sketch page can be submitted at a time. If your design has multiple pages, you will need to submit each page individually. (Upon submission, Smartling annotates elements of the Sketch file with IDs which are then used to match translation during the retrieval process.)

Once your content has been submitted to Smartling, you'll need to save your Sketch file and use this saved file to retrieve translations.

Retrieve Translations from Smartling

  1. Click Plugins > Smarting > Retrieve translations from Smartling from the Sketch menu.
  2. If you are not already logged into Smartling, you will be asked to login to your account.
  3. Select the Smartling project from the drop down menu used to translate your Sketch content.
  4. Click OK to go to the next prompt or Cancel to exit.
  5. Select the language you'd like to download from the drop down and click OK to download or Cancel to exit.

A new page will be created in your Sketch design for each language you download with a locale appended to the end to indicate a translated page (e.g. Page 1 [French (France)]).

Preview Design Changes

The Smartling Sketch plugin has a built in pseudo translation feature that can be used to preview changes in text length that occur when translating to other languages, against your layout design.

Pseudo Translate Page

  1. Click on Plugins > Smartling > Pseudo Translate Page.
  2. Select the Text expansion ration from the dropdown.
  3. Select your Output type.
  4. Click OK to pseudo translate the page or Cancel to exit the menu.

Text expansion Ratios:

  • Chinese, Japanese: reduces text size by 30%.
  • Korean: reduces text size by 50%.
  • Baseline: displays pseudo translations with no text expansion.
  • Most European Languages: increases text size by 15%.
  • French, Italian: increases text size by 30%.
  • Dutch, German: increases text size by 50%.

Output Options:

Selecting Duplicate page will output the pseudo translations in a new Sketch page.
Deselecting Duplicate page will output the pseudo translations on your current sketch page.

Don't Have Access to a Smartling Account? You can use the Smartling Sketch plugin to export your Sketch files and provide to your Smartling Administrator for translation. Use the plugin to import the translated files once they are complete.

Export Content to File

To export content, click on Plugins > Smarting > Export Content to File, and export a .png of your design.

Provide the JSON file(s) and image file(s) to your Smartling Administrator for translation. The image files will provide your linguists with visual context, helping to get your translations right the first time - reducing translation cost and time to market.

One Sketch page can be exported at a time. If your design has multiple pages, you will need to export each page individually.

Import Translations From File

Once your translations are complete, your Smartling Administrator can provide you with the translated Sketch files.

To import translated JSON files into Sketch:

  1. Click on Plugins > Smarting > Import page translations from file from the Sketch Menu.
  2. Select your translated JSON file from your directory.
  3. Click Open to import or Cancel to exit menu.

A new page will be created in your Sketch design for each language you download with a locale appended to the end to indicate a translated page (e.g. Page 1 [French (France)]).
