Managing Translation Projects

Request Translations Using Jobs

This article is for Account Owners and Project Managers.

The Jobs feature allows you to group and prioritize content for translation, and monitor the progress throughout completion. Jobs can be created on a file basis, or by selecting individual strings to be included in a job.

You must first create a job, then authorize it to begin the translation process.

Create a Job

Upload Your Files

To create your job if you are uploading files manually:

  1. Go to Projects (select a project) > Content > Jobs.
  2. Click Create Job. The dialog box will appear.
  3. Upload your file(s). If the file already exists in Smartling, it will be overwritten. If a file in an existing job has additional content added to that file but is then uploaded to a new job, only the difference between the two files will get uploaded to the new job.
  4. Enter a name for the job.
  5. Select a due date and time zone for your job deadline.
  6. (Optional) add a reference number and a description for your job.
  7. Select the languages for which you would like your job translated.
  8. Click Create.

From the List View

If your content has already been captured in Smartling, you can create a job from the "List View" (Content > Translations).

  1. Go to Content > Translations.
  2. Select Awaiting Authorization from the drop down menu.
  3. Select individual content using the checkbox next to each string. Use the checkbox next to the Actions menu to select strings in bulk.
  4. Click Actions > Authorize.
  5. Use the checkboxes to select the languages for which you'd like to translate your content. Use the dropdown next to each language to select the workflow that the content will be sent.
  6. Add content to an existing job using the drop down in the bottom section of the prompt.
  7. To create a new job for your content, click Create Job. Fill in your job details, and click Create.
  8. Click Submit to authorize your job or Cancel to exit the prompt.

The Due Date for a job refers to the due date for the job in total. To set due dates by workflow step, see Change Job Due Dates.

Authorize a Job

Authorizing a job indicates that you are approving the content in that job to be sent through a translation workflow. If you created your job in the "List View", you will have authorized the job as part of the job creation process.

To authorize a job created in the Jobs tab:

  1. Go to Projects (select a project) > Content > Jobs
  2. Under the Actions column, click Authorize.
  3. In the dialog box, select a translation workflow for each locale.
  4. Click Confirm.

A job requires authorization any time unauthorized content is added to it. Authorizing a job only affects any unauthorized content. Content that is already in progress or completed will not be affected by this action.

Edit Job Name, Description, or Due Date

  1. Go to Projects (select a project) > Content > Jobs.
  2. Click the name of a job.
  3. Click the name, description, or due date to edit.
