Set Rates for a Resource

This article is for Account Owners who are not using Smartling's Language Services.

In Smartling, adding translation rates to a rate card allows you to create cost estimates to anticipate translation costs before work begins, removing the need to manually calculate costs offline.

Create a Rate Card for an Agency

You can create a rate card which will apply to all users within the agency for the specified language.

  1. Go to Team > Agencies.
  2. Click the agency for which you're creating a rate card.
  3. Select Rates.
  4. Click Add Rate Card. The dialog box will appear.
  5. Fill in all required fields then click Save Changes.

Create a Rate Card for a Freelancer

You can create a rate card for a Translation Resource or a Translation Resource Manager.

  1. Go to Team > People.
  2. Click the user for which you're creating a rate card.
  3. Click Rates. Click Add Rate Card.
  4. Fill in all required fields then click Save Changes.

You cannot create a rate card for an individual user if they are an agency user.

Rate Card Fields

  • Language Pair (required): The available language pair options are determined by the workflow(s) settings to which the agency/user is assigned. See Create a Workflow for more information. 
  • Currency (required): USD, GBP, Euro, Yen.
  • Content Type (required): The content type should match the workflow settings to which the agency/user is assigned. See Create a Workflow for more information.
  • Translation, Editing, Review: The rate per word or hour (or non-payable) for each applicable workflow step.

If you're adding a rate for an agency, break down the translation cost per workflow step that the agency is responsible for in their workflow(s).

If you're adding a rate for an individual Translator, only add the rate for their workflow step.

In Smartling, adding translation rates to a rate card allows you to create cost estimates to anticipate translation costs before work begins, removing the need to manually calculate costs offline. Rate changes occur over time, so you have the ability to update or delete active rate cards.

Update a Rate Card for an Agency

  1. Go to Team > Agencies.
  2. Click the agency for which you need to update the rate card.
  3. Select the Rates tab.
  4. Click the pencil icon at the top right corner of the rate card.
  5. You will be prompted to change the rates for each workflow step.
  6. Click Save Changes.

Update a Rate Card for a Freelancer

  1. Go to Team > People.
  2. Click the individual for which you need to update the rate card.
  3. Click Rates.  
  4. Click the pencil icon at the top right corner of the rate card.
  5. You will be prompted to change the rates for each workflow step.
  6. Click Save Changes.
